Refugee Laxmi Dahal shares his experiences in the Finding Voice Project.
Tucson represents one of the top 10 cities in the U.S. to welcome refugees fleeing violence or discrimination. How they fit in and find their voice powers an innovative program at Catalina Magnet High School.
Josh Schachter co-founded the Finding Voice Project, a literacy and visual arts program that guides young refugees in exploring their past and present homes through photography and writing, and helps build their confidence to talk to others about their experiences.
He and Laxmi Dahal, a refugee from Nepal/Bhutan who has participated in the Finding Voice Project for the last 3 years and graduates this week from Catalina, join Arizona Illustrated to discuss the program and its impact.
The project marks the year’s successes with a multicultural celebration of arts and expression, to be held Thurs., May 19, at 6:30pm in the Catalina Magnet High School Auditorium at 3645 E. Pima Street.
