The University of Arizona Police Department is still looking for a suspect in an on-campus homicide Sunday night.
According to UAPD’s initial crime alert, the shooting happened at the volleyball courts outside of the Arizona Sonora Residence Hall near Park Ave. and Fourth St. Witnesses reported the weapon used in the shooting was a small black handgun.
The victim, identified late Monday as Minhaj Jamshidi, was found lying next to a car in a parking lot south of the residence hall.
According to a campus-wide statement Monday afternoon, neither the suspect or the victim are affiliated with the University of Arizona. Jamshidi was a Pima Community College student and was named in a statement released by Chancellor Jeffrey P. Nasse.
Early reports say witnesses tried to carry the victim to a car to take him to the hospital. Life saving measures were performed when emergency services arrived, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The suspect fled north on foot from the volleyball courts, and as of Monday afternoon, he has not been located or identified. UAPD said they would not comment on an ongoing investigation, but they have released witness photos and a description.
Witnesses described him as a six-foot tall Middle Eastern or Hispanic male between the ages of 19 and 25. He has collar-length, dark curly hair and facial hair. Pictures released by UAPD show him wearing tan shorts and a white short-sleeve shirt.
UAPD reports officers arrived on scene at 11:01 p.m. The first UAlert, the University’s campus-wide text alert system, went out at 11:33 p.m. The all-clear went out around 1 a.m.
Classes proceeded normally on Monday, after a second series of UAlert messages relayed that law enforcement found the shooting was an “isolated incident, and does not believe that campus is under any ongoing threat.”
In a statement released by Interim Vice President for Student Affairs Amanda Kraus and UAPD Chief Chris Olson Monday afternoon, the university said it was increasing counseling availability in the coming days to students impacted by the shooting.
“A number of students witnessed the incident and many more may feel its impact today and in the following days,” the statement read. The University said it’s also increasing the number of UAPD officers on campus in response.
