Featured on the August 18th, 2017 edition of ARIZONA SPOTLIGHT with host Mark McLemore:

  • As many as 40 million Americans may meet the clinical conditions to qualify as addicts, according to a study from Columbia University. Food, gambling, shopping, and even exercise are examples of things that people can become addicted to. When out of control, these behaviors can be every bit as damaging to people's lives as drugs and alcohol. This week, Arizona Spotlight looks at the current addiction crisis beyond opioids, through the words of people who struggle to overcome their issues, a doctor who studies the changes to brain chemistry that occur in response to addiction, and a community effort in Tucson that provides support and resources to those coping with addiction crisis.

Special thanks to Beth, Carl & Janet of Overeaters Anonymous, Todd Vanderah PhD of The Department of Pharmacology at The University of Arizona and Tom Litwicki of Old Pueblo Community Services for their participation in this show.

From last week:

ARIZONA SPOTLIGHT airs every Friday at 8:30 am and 6:00 pm and every Saturday at 5:00 pm on NPR 89.1 FM / 1550 AM.
