The Pima Animal Care Center is receiving a $120,000 grant to continue a successful Spanish-language outreach campaign to spread awareness of the services the center provides, including returning lost pets to their homes.
Pima County's José Merino said with a similar grant last year, PACC launched a Spanish-language campaign that served about 2,700 people and provided nearly 1,300 dogs with free microchips, collars and tags in the two zip codes, 85706 and 85713. Those areas had the largest imbalance in the number of pets coming into the shelter and the number of pets being adopted, fostered or returned to their owners.
“When we designed that campaign, we wanted to acknowledge the profound role that language plays,” Merino said. “And what we found through this campaign is that our Spanish speaking community is incredibly grateful to receive resources in the language in which they're most comfortable speaking.”
In 2025, the campaign will expand to include three additional zip codes, 85705, 85746 and 85756, which also have more pets coming into the shelter than being adopted out.
