In front of the “Embrace” memorial, Giffords addressed a small crowd that included many people who were there or personally affected by the mass shooting during the 2011 “Congress on Your Corner” event in Tucson.
"We are living in challenging times," she said. "We're up for the challenge. My own recovery has taken years. Many, many, many people have helped me along the way, and I learned so much. I learned that people care for each other and work together. Progress is possible, a better world is possible.”
Giffords was one of 13 people wounded that day, and six died, including 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green, Giffords's staffer Gabe Zimmerman, federal District Court Chief Judge John Roll, Dorothy Morris, Phyllis Schneck, and Dorwan Stoddard.
