Listen:
Almost one in three Arizonans will head out of town this weekend, according to an estimate from AAA Arizona.
That is an increase of 14 percent over last year's travel numbers.
The vast majority of those travelers will be on the road. AAA estimates 79 percent of holiday travelers, about 1.6 million people, will drive to their final destination.
Why are so many Arizonans taking a road trip versus flying?
"Right now Arizonans are paying $2.15 a gallon [for gasoline] on average, and that’s the lowest gas price the state has seen going into Memorial Day Weekend in more than a decade,” said AAA Arizona spokesperson Valerie Vinyard.
Oil prices are also driving down flight prices, according to AAA. Their average airfare index shows flights are 26 percent cheaper than they were last year.
