Interstate 10 runs 392 miles through Arizona and is one of the state’s major transport corridors, traversed by thousands of trucks and cars each day. But seen by itself, the level of traffic can be misleading regarding the impact of the corridor on the state.
"What a lot of people don’t realize is that 60 percent of the freight on Arizona’s roads simply passes through Arizona from one state to another state," said Arizona State University professor Michael Kuby. "So we have to deal with the related congestion, the pollution, the accidents, but we don’t get a lot of economic benefit from all of these trucks just passing through."
He said he is working with researchers at the University of Arizona and Northern Arizona University to identify ways that the state can capture some of that benefit.
The interdisciplinary team is also studying ways to use new technologies to make I-10 safer, more efficient and to lower the costs of maintaining and traveling on it.
