A U.S. House of Representatives committee is set to hear testimony from the new head of Homeland Security as well as border residents and law enforcement officials.
Locally, anticipation of what will come out of Tuesday’s meeting of the Homeland Security Committee is tempered with caution
Assistant Tucson Police Chief Ramon Batista said on a conference call sponsored by Southern Border Communities Coalition that balancing community trust and presidential orders has been difficult.
“Without the community believing in the police department we can’t get our jobs done,” Batista said. “ It has been very, very trying and very difficult. I think we’ve done a good job with it but certainly these last few weeks have been very challenging.”
Yuma County Sheriff Leon Wilmot will testify before the committee, which includes Republican Congresswoman Martha McSally.
