The Pima County Board of Supervisors approved a plan to turn Canoa Hills Golf Course into a county-owned nature park with a 4-1 vote.
The course closed five years ago. Owner Morgan North agreed to donate the land to the county.
"Green Valley has embraced this open, natural setting with enthusiasm, and already maintenance partnerships to care for the parks are in the works," said Supervisor Steve Christy, a Republican who represents the Green Valley area on the board.
County estimates put the initial cost of rehabilitating the course at $90,000.
"If you wonder why your roads don’t get fixed, it’s because there’s always a shiny object out there, the next shiny object ... that is available, that people want to spend money on," said Republican Ally Miller, the lone opposing vote. "And this has happened time and time again."
“We have many tasks that we as elected officials have to accomplish to serve our residents," said Supervisor Sharon Bronson, a Democrat. "We’re just not singly tasked with one item."
The donation includes 130 acres of land. Local groups including the Green Valley Sahuarita Chamber of Commerce have volunteered to help with the rehabilitation and upkeep.
