An 8-year-old boy was fatally shot in St. David Monday afternoon, which is located just a little over seven and a half miles south of Benson in Cochise County.

A spokesperson with the Cochise County Sheriff’s Office told AZPM that the child was on an ATV near where an adult male was doing target practice in the area.

CCSO spokesperson said that it appears at this point in time that the child was “in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

The child was shot in the chest with a high powered air rifle that shoots .22 caliber pellets according to the CCSO Facebook post.

He was transported to Benson Hospital, where around 6 p.m. December 18, he was pronounced dead.

CCSO is preparing to send the information to the Cochise County Attorney’s Office for review to determine the charges.
