The Arizona Supreme Court ruled Monday that the state does not have to reimburse Pima County for taxes levied for Tucson Unified’s programs stemming from its decades-long desegregation case.
TUSD board president Natalie Luna Rose said that the district is figuring out how the ruling will affect them.
“It kind of puts entities like TUSD and Pima County into having to readjust in their Next steps," she said. "And the state legislature has had a real distaste for TUSD and deseg and anything having to do with our district. And it's just really disappointing, especially as the school year’s just about to start.”
The Supreme Court unanimously agreed with a lower court ruling that the state does not have to provide a property tax rebate to homeowners in TUSD to cover desegregation costs that go beyond the 1% limit on residential property taxes.
The district's desegregation budget funds programs designed to support students and maintain equity across the district.
